Chapter nineteen

The Scrollpot Lodge

Helena had a hard time falling asleep that night. Her mind was racing as she tried to connect all the open dots in her head. Eventually, sleep finally found her.

When she opened her eyes again, she found herself making her way through thick brambles. She moved very low to the ground and with unusual jerking movements forward. Her instincts were sharp, and she felt the presence of her prey.

The movement was both sneaky and at the same time restless and searching, quickly shifting in perception and always pausing to scan the area. She felt confident and powerful, her next feast mere moments away.

Just behind a thick bush, she noticed something indistinct that she couldn’t make out, but there certainly was something back there. She felt this strange tear again, and with a ripple, her vision split so that she saw the unknown moving thing out of two perspectives now. Another split and she saw four of them, and in rapid succession, seemingly hundreds of points of view circled the still unrecognizable prey.

Helena suddenly woke up with a jolt, but she didn’t scream and was not in a panic, unlike at other times she experienced this nightmare. When she slowly opened her eyes, she noticed Drizzle standing next to her. He closed a small bottle with a cork and wore a worried expression.

“Are you all right, dear Helena Flinn?” he asked.

“Did you just wake me up before it got real bad?” She whispered in a hushed tone.

“I might just have. Do you think this is a rather bad time? I can come back tomorrow if you need some rest.” He continued to carefully inspect her.

She quickly jumped out of bed and grabbed her ‘nightly excursion bag’ to indicate that she was ready.

“How is the Jilx situation? Everything all right?”

“Unfortunately not. I managed to contain his impulse to report the incident, but we should avoid the lab and Vinaborg in general, to be honest,” he replied as they made their way to the goblin tube.

“Hmm.” Helena stopped. “So, where are we going then? And what about the dream?”

“I have someplace in mind where we can talk and make some more progress on the dream,” he mentioned as they entered the tube.

Only now, Helena noticed a large bag over Drizzle’s shoulder that quietly clanked with every movement, and just as she thought about asking what it was for, the wagon started to drop into a deep descent.

She still hadn’t figured out how exactly the tube system worked, and the answers from Drizzle didn’t make sense to her yet. She felt the wagon took very different routes all the time. Even during their trips to the same location like the lab, the routes always changed. Somehow a single wagon could connect and disconnect from the others and take different paths all on its own. To call a wagon, one needed a goblin gadget to ‘communicate’ with the terminal. There were no fixed routes, so when holding the gadget to the access
